A buddy of mine has a 2001 F250 Super Duty Diesel 4x4. The rear pinion has some bad teeth so he is wanting to replace the ring and pinion. Currently, the rearend is an open rearend so he would also like to get either a posi unit or a locker for the rearend. The gear ratio is 3.73.
1. What type of rearend is this....10.5?? When he went to the dealership, they gave him part #'s for an 8.8. I told him there is no way that his rearend is that small. I'm assuming since it is a F250 it is not a 11.25.
2. Does anyone have any opinions as to where/who has the best deals on gears, a locker or a posi unit for this application.
Yup. Its a 10.5 Sterling and the best deal I know of is Randy's Ring & Pinion. They also sell Detroit and other lockers and posis. I will say if he's going to take the time to go in there and fix it, or pay to have it fixed, get the whole rebuild kit to replace the bearings etc while he's at it. And if he gets a posi some synthetics like Royal Purple have enough slick to them you dont need friction modifiers.
If it were me I would put a Detroit Locker in the rear and be done with it! They ALWAYS work and don't need any special treatment. If he wants something a little less LOCKED then the Detroit Tru-trac would be the way to go. I have used both in several vehicles and for several thousand miles. Both are strong and bullet proof and will give years of trouble free of service. For a street truck the Tru-Trac would more than likely be the better choice. With the power and torque of our Power Strokes I wouldn't even think about a Loc-Rite or any other type of 'drop in' locker, I don't think they would hold up.
another place I would recomend, I have always recieved plenty of help, real good service, and no lie, they were just down the street from me, so i found them out of lazynest, but it paid off. By the way, sorry AMJ, but also compare the prices.
