I have a 2001 F-350 when I turn on the a/c it only will blow out the defrost vent(it does blow cold the compressor is coming on). I checked the fuses- all are good. It will not blow out the floor vents or the dash vents. I hate to go to the dealership and pay for their labor if this is something I can fix. Thanks in advance for any helpful input.
A vacuum leak is causing the blend door in the heater box to keep the air going out the defrost ducts. It is the federally-mandated default mode for safety.
The most likely place to start looking for the leak is the rubber lines that run down to your front hubs to activate your four-wheel-drive hubs. You could also have a bad vacuum pump, but the root cause is no vacuum.
another place to check is under the glove box. there is a vaccuum hub under there that get damaged or one or more lines could be knocked off by a passengers feet
Yep classic symptom of a vacuum problem. Like Springer said ck the rubber lines down to you hubs, they are notorius for causing problems. If they all look good what you can do is plug the red line that goes to your hublock solenoid. If the a/c starts coming out of the vents then you can rule out you hubs. Then start checking the vac lines in the cab behind the glovebox. it doesn't take very much pinch in one of the lines to cause a vac problem.
Thanks for the help guys! I found my problem- it was a vacum line leak and it was under the glove box. Seems that my girlfriend's little dog that likes to ride in the front of the truck with us must have been bored and needed something to chew on and thought the the vacum line looked good. Replaced the line that turned into a chew toy and everything works fine. Thanks again....
So I checked all my lines, under the glovebox, behind it / etc... and nothing. Everything looks good. Any other points of interest, or is it time to take it to the shop?
Do you have the auto lock hubs? If so you might want to check to see if they are working correctly. Also check the vacumn pump on the passenger side wheelwell. Hopefully you will find the problem and get it fixed, without taking it to the shop.
Firstly, I don't have a 4wd. Hubs are not an issue.
Secondly, does anyone have a means of testing this pump? Anyone have a picture? I've NEVER dealt with a vacuum issue, other than rotted rubber lines on my first car!
The way I checked my pump was to disconnect the supply line to the reservoir. The pump will start. the stick your finger over the fitting where the supply line attached to and the pump will turn off. You could stick a vacuum gauge on it to see how much vacuum you are pulling. I don't remember how much vacuum it pulls.

Fill out your signature so we will know that you dont have a 4x4.
Pump is on pax fenderwell under hood near the blower motor for the a/c. have some one turn key to on position while you are unpluging line to pump, feel if the pump is sucking. If not check fuses, if fuses are good, and no suction, replace pump.
I'm an idiot. I ASSUMED that there wasn't a fuse for JUST the pump. I was wrong. Tracked it down, burned out, and replaced it. It keeps eating fuses. Any idea what would cause this? Can't find a short anywhere!
