I've read a lot of the threads on here on this subject and know you guys are going to tell me to get the codes read. I've been trying to locate someone within 30M to get this done (Autozone was no help) and I'm still looking. In the meantime though, here are my symptoms. By the way 2001 F-250 automatic with 113,000 miles.
Light starts flashing once I put the truck into reverse or drive after starting.
Somewhat hard shift from 1>2 and 2>3, 3>4 seems fine. not really bad, just harder than before.
Speedo is looking like it is reading fine.
This started after the last time I towed a boat and used the overdrive off mode. Didn't happen before that.
Unhooked the battery cables to re-set the computer - no difference.
Its been awhile since I serviced the transmission (don't recall the last time). Would it be wise to start there until I can get the codes?

Any suggestions for right now?
Thanks
You should really change out the trans fluid, including the torque converter and trans filter every 36K or sooner..
My OD light was flashing and it turned out to be a VSS sensor on the top of the rear end.. Napa sells them for $10.49.. p/n 530780 (they call it a ABS sensor) .. see: www.napaonline.com
Aamco scanned the transmission codes for free for me today. Looks like code 705/708, transmission position sensor otherwise known as the Neutral Safety Switch I am told. It should also fix the problem I am having with starting (having to wiggle the lever) to get it to turn over. I think I dodged a bullet financially on this one.
