What tranny would be used in a 94 xlt 4wd 5.8L auto and also a 94-95 xlt 2wd 302ci auto? I ask because I used to own the 94 2wd version and the tranny would slip when backing up a camper of any size and now I'm looking at a 94 4wd 5.8L and would hate to think I'd have the same problem with another wimpy transmission.
You'd have to know what your door tag said on the old truck to be sure you didn't have the same transmission. A lot of guys don't care for the E4OD but my 1990 has one and I think it's perfectly fine, but that truck hasn't towed or hauled anything in a good long while.
That '94 auto would be the E4OD (Ford, to my knowledge didn't put the AOD behind the 5.8, with good reason). The earliest versions of the E4OD did have some reliability issues, but it was the heavy duty 4-spd auto transmission Ford used in its light trucks for 8 years or so. Properly maintained, it can last quite a while, properly rebuilt with the upgrades, it could outlast the truck its in. Keeping the heat down in a tranny during use also helps prolong their life--high temps kill a tranny quick.
