6.0 problem

well this my first post since i am new to this site. and it sucks that the first one has to do with a problem im having. hopefully someone can shed some light on this. first let me start by saying i have a 04 350 4x4 with 52,000 no mods other than a k an n air filter. my problem is i dont have much accerlation on take off. the turbo just lags real bad then it spools up and blows black smoke. not alot just enough to be noticable. it just doesnt seem to have any power. it does the same thing when i get going and have to give it some more fuel such as climbing a hill. some people told it sounds like a injector problem. but i dont know. some days the problem is not there others it is. the truck doesnt seem to be running rough the idle is fine. just have the one problem. i just want to get a idea on what might be the problem before i take to my local dealer

well it could be a contaminated maf sensor or a egr valve that is cracked open just enough to kill backpressure.

get rid of the k&n. you will be glad you did.

First check the EGR valve. Since I am deployed right now and a vehicle mechanic, we had a few 6.0l fords come in because they complained of black smoke and slow lag. Our shop truck does the same thing. When ever we can we try to give it hell to blow it out. Since the fastest you can go here is about 20mph, the EGR valve would clog up bad. I pulled the one out and if was filled. Some brake clean and a small pick to get it all out, and It ran fine. I would of replaced it but it take about 4 weeks to get parts here. I'd try that first, not hard to do, though use 2 pry bars to pop the EGR valve up.

You have a 5 year 100,000 mile warranty on the engine so it might not be out of warranty for your problem.

I pulled the plug on my 2004 EGR 60,000 miles ago(when the engine is off). No CEL or codes, maybe a bit less boost, 25 instead of 28 but runs like a champ.

Clean the EGR, clean the MAF sensor and put a stock air filter back in. Some dealers will cancel your engine warranty if they see the K&N. Do the air filter before taking it to a dealer.

Only thing is......do NOT use brake cleaner on the EGR valve as it will damage it. Use CARB cleaner. They aren't the same thing, but they work the same way.

and FWIW--God bless you soldier. Thank you for your service to this country--the land of the free BECAUSE of the BRAVE.
