I currently have a small oil leak that drips about 2 to 5 small drips after I shut down. It has dripped this amount every time that I shut down for the last year or so. Since it was such a small leak and didn't affect oil level much I just deal with the drips in the driveway. However I want to switch over to Rotella 5W-40 for the winter and I'm wondering if the synth will leak a bunch more then the 2 to 5 dino drips I'm getting now.
I suppose that could be a problem as the oil will be thinner than 15W-40.
Maybe you can tell us where it's leaking from, and we can help pinpoint it and see if it's an easy enough fix that you won't have to worry about it anymore.
It seems to drip from the bottom of the oil filter but there is also some oil on the back/bottom of the oil pan. The last time I changed the oil I wiped everything down to try and pinpoint where it's coming from. I ran the truck for a couple of minutes and noticed a small drop that ran down the oil filter and was about to drip off of the bottom of the filter. Thoughts?
It won't be thinner at operating temp than 15W-40 -- they're both 40W oils when hot. 5W-40 is thinner when cold. I'm with Ryan though -- let's see if we can find the leak!!
Ive fixed a leak on a customer's truck which was exactly what you described, the filter wasn't leaking but looked like it. However the aluminum end housing had a stress fracture or a pinpoint hole in it that let oil leak out. Had to pull the oil cooler and replace the rear header.

How would you recommend I check to see if I have the same problem? Would I be able to crawl under the truck with a flashlight and see this or does the truck have to be on a lift?
