Do you have to take out the entire air box (under the batt too?) to get the filter to fit? Mine is wedged between the fuse block/master cyl and the front screws for the base of the air box (the ones right behind the batt). It wont sit low enough to close the hood either. Any tricks or suggestion?
Not the part under the battery. At least, I didn't have to. I just removed the sock air box, zip tied the sensor out of the way, and set the filter in. Post some pics of your setup so we can see if there is anything you missed.
Ok, I'll take some tomorrow. I couldnt leave the 6637 in because of the not fitting issue. I had to actually wedge it between the battery and fuse block/master cyl (after denting the filters wire mesh slightly).
I'm planning to fab up a battery mount and just remove the whole darn air box all together. This was just another frustrating thing tonight. My dad and I replace the fuel pump in moms suburban (dropped the tank) and the darn thing didnt work. Turns out the ground broke after we installed it, but before the engine could fire. Let me tell ya, you hook some jumper cables between that and one of our trucks and the engine spins like you dont have spark plugs in
Look through my gallery to see my install. I, too, have to maneuver mine into just the right position in order for the hood to close because I did not remove the bottom of my filter box either.
What works for me is to nest the far end of the filter at an angle in the bottom open area of the stock air box, and then slide it as far toward the fender as possibile while keeping the end of the filter in the "nest". The hood should then close well.
I just did this saturday. I took of the stock air box cover the top part. Then I threw the old air filter out of there. I took the batterie out and the took out the lower part of the air box. 4 screws then put the batterie back in. Then I cut a 3 inch piece of 4 inch Exhaust pipe to help the filter stay on to the intake tube put the filter back in and I was done,

I took the bottom of the air box out and still dont have enough clearance. I went to take the bottom part that the air box mounted to, but the battery also sits on it and if I take that out, theres no where to clamp the battery back down. Like I said, I plan to fab up a battery mount and take out the entire air box setup. The exhaust pipe works nice though. Much better then trying to slip the tube onto the filter.
Yeah, somethin's not right. Mine fit right in place, no problems with clearances. Mine does touch the hood insulation, but no problems with it closing at all. What's the diameter of that filter? I wonder if it's possible he got the wrong one (even though it may have been labeled correctly).
You're right, Joe... if he got the one that folks refer to as the BHAF (Big Honkin Air Filter), I believe that its was about a good 1-2 inches larger in both diameter and length than the 6637 that we're all using.
Well if the info Izzy has is right, mines the bigger one cause it has plastic ends. I'll have to go out to the garage and measure it later. I ordered the 6637 from the napa parts desk, and it came in a box labeled that too. hmm......
Can't go by the metal/plastic ends info... you're going to have to measure it to know for sure.
I just received two 6637's a couple of weeks ago from FleetFilter, and they have the same plastic ends that my first one had when I installed it back in January.
Twags6 - I had to remove the bottom of mine also.I tried every which way to make it work without removing it but no luck. I did the ccv mod @ the same time so this may have had somethin to do with it. Some trucks fit up alright without removing bottom as you know. Good Luck. BTW Iused some 4" pieces of stainless exhaust as a coupler both @ the filter and @ the ccv replacement. If you need some 4" SS let me know and Ill get some to you .I had a rough time finding some till one of the guys on this site sent me some .
