Make sure the pendulum is set right, and the arrow is pointing down.
I have a Kelsey in my truck and I have had no problems with it at all. The brakes on my trailer are pretty crappy, so even maxed out it won't lock them unless I max out the lever.

Honestly, I don't see the problem with a pendulum style, they work great if they are set right. If you can't set them properly, and mount them in such a way you can adjust it fairly easily, then maybe you should reconsider being responsible for a heavy articulated vehicle traveling at highway speeds.

Oh, didn't think to ask if that was a pendulum type. Yeah, that's touchy. There's a **** on the side to set that right. If you've got it turned all the way forward or back (can't remember which), the controller will send full power to the brakes immediately. Make sure that's set right. Sorry to offend the pendulum guys! I'm just spoiled. Because I'm in the RV business, I've gone through all of them. There's some really good ones out there. But if you're not towing a travel trailer all over the state like I do, buy (or fix) what makes sense.
I adjusted the pendulum on it last night, dad will be trying it out today. The biggest problem is that we live in town, and our farm is about 20 miles away, and all of our trailers stay at the farm, because we have nowhere to park them, makes it hard to mess with them much. I suspect that the controller is probably messed up and will need to be replaced. I'll just have to talk dad into replacing it with a good one...
