Hey gang......new to this site but have a question. 2001 F150 with 55,000 k needed the front discs turned as they were pulsating. simple enough but now 10,000 k later they are doing it again. Is this a flaw that the dealerhsip won't tell me about as I have tried to get this done under warranty. It is a leased truck and would perhaps like to buy it but not if I need 200.00 worth of brake work every 4 months. Any inside hints as to what is going on, bad run of discs? Thanks, Jeff
Well, with todays brake pads you've been very lucky to have the rotors make it to 55K.
One problem is these "lifetime" warranty brake pads. They are Metallic, and alot more metallic in them so they don't wear out. They just glaze over and cause too much heat build up in the rotors then causing them to warp or destort.
The second go around at 10k later is that your rotors have been turned down and now are thinner, so they warped faster.
If the rotors can be turned down again which I imagine not.. turn them again.
And believe it or not..... buy the cheapest brake pads you can find and put them on. the cheaper pads have less metallic flakes in them and that means less heat. they will last just as long.
If you do end up buying new rotors checkout the aftermarket product(drilled or slotted). I don't know about the 150 yet(only 19,000 miles on the truck) but on my Ranger the aftermarket drilled discs not only worked much better but were about $20 a piece cheaper.
I will tell you that the ART rotors I have on mine are working very well. I would love to have a brake test with a stock truck. The fact that they don't warp is a bigger bonus. Just MHO.
I have just replaced my rotors and pads for the first time (85K miles), I bought the truck new and did have the pulsating while applying the brakes (Non-ABS). I replace them with the slotted rotors and pads recommended for the slotted rotors. Since then, no more pulsating and better braking, not a huge difference, but noticable! Have Fun!!
