I own an 89 f250 with a 351. From the factory it has duals off the headers leading to the cat which has one outlet. The problem is i can t figure out what size muffler to get. The stock muffler inlet slipped right over the cat outlet. I would like the same from an aftermarket muffler. This is my first time with exhaust so i dont know the sizes. I measured the oultet on the cat with a tape. It looked to be barely under 2.5". Does this mean i need a muffler with a 2.5" inlet? Ive been looking at the flowmaster with 3" in 2.5" out but im pretty sure thats not going to slip right on.
Can anyone set me straight on this? I really am not sure what im talking about.
Muffler inlet and outlet sizes are inside diameter (ID). Pipes are given in outside diameter (OD). If you have 2.5" pipe, I would go with a 2.5" inlet and 2.5" outlet on the muffler.
If you get a turbo style muffler (has three pipes, one in, one out and one in between so exhaust goes front to back, then to front, then back and out) look down the tubes. Some brands get restrictive by reduced diameter inside the case (like Thrush Turbo), others do not get restrictive (like my Flowtech Raptor).
I should throw in that the Raptor is Flowtech's quietest muffler. I wouldn't mind it a tad louder, but most guys here seem to want quite a bit louder. Flowtech has a nice selection, but so do some other companies.
