Question ranger exhaust

I want to replace the cat and muffler on my '02 2.3. on the stock exhaust, the pipe before and after the cat is larger than the pipe just before and after the muffler. should I keep this sizing and have a cat with larger inlet/ outlet than the muffler, or should I go with the same size all the way through? Im thinking either 2.5 all through or 2.5 cat down to 2.25 muffler. any advice?

What size is the pipe before the cat? I would go no bigger than that.

TheDude, factory exhaust systems will always have larger cat pipes than muffler/tailpipes. As the exhaust gases move from the header pipe to the end of the tailpipe, they cool and contract. That's why a factory system tends to "neck down" as it runs under the vehicle. This keeps the exhaust gas velocity up and therefore the torque. For this reason I'd keep the stock tailpipe sizing (or go up no more than 1 pipe size). The biggest restrictors are the cat and muffler anyway, not the pipes.
