1997 F150 4x4 Shifter problems

1997 F150XLT 4.6V8 4x4

Hello everyone,

Just today I noticed that my truck will no longer shift into 4x4 mode. I have the shifter that is located on the floor to the right of the gas pedal. When you try to shift absolutely nothing happens at all. I was wondering if anyone has any advice for me on what it is before I take it to the garage to be fixed.

Also having another problem. My Airbag readiness light on my instrument cluster warning lights panel is flashing when the truck is started and then stays lit when driving the truck. What does this usually mean?

Lastly, the grease boots that attach the idler arm and pitman arm to the steering linkage bar are sqeaking quite badly. Ive heard that you can regrease these boots with a syringe type greasing tool. Is this the case or would these need to be replaced?

Thanks for the help,

Mike Krivsky

So is the shifter moving, or is the lever stuck in 2HI? If it is moving, I would look at the vaccume device that is located on top of the front differential that locks the front axle in.

Yup...just shove a needle into the boot and pump it full of grease. Mine was squeeking badly, so I pumped them all full of grease, and she's been silent for 8 months now...
