I just bought a new shift boot (with the included mounting plate) for my 1994 F150 4.9L Manual. I have a silly question: after removing the shift **** - how the heck do you get the new one on? just slide it down? do I have to remove the entire shifter pole?
Yes, you must remove shifter.
Raise the boot and you should see two bolts attaching shifter to stub shaft protruding from transmission.
Slide old boot off and slide on new one. Reinstall shifter and fasten boot trim ring to floor.
I recently changed mine (mechanic destroyed trim ring during new clutch install) and the foam inside the shifter disintegrated. Found another boot assembly with good foam and changed it again.
Unbelievable the amount of heat that radiates from that boot without the foam.
Good luck
Post script: previous instructions are for ZF5OD.
Your f-150 likely has M5OD.
For M5OD there is one bolt connecting shifter to transmission stub shaft.
Got the shifter off today. Figured I'd also replace the bushing since I was already there and it need it badly.
So, does the secondary boot - the one under the main boot - slide under the carpet or under the lip of the trans tunnel, too? I know, stupid question. My gut tells me it just slides under the carpet, but...
