I also get sputtering/hurking/jerking when towing and the motor is trying to upshift - at around 55 mph... I just have to get out of the accelerator and all is well.

Maybe this is all regen related.. Sure would be nice to have a REGEN ON button - hell I would put my truck through a regen every time before I towed..

Had all updates done at dealer - cant find anything wrong...

GRRRR

Sputtering/hurking/jurking isn't normal. You need to tell your dealer to check your injectors.

Have your dealer check FSA 07T07

Certain vehicles built at the KY truck plant from April 3 to May 21st 2007 were exposed to reverse polarity on the fuel injectors which caused a lot of the issues you are describing.

Thanks RangerEdge - they checked the injectors (my friend is a service manager at the dealer I purchased from - and he said mine wasn't affected).

:-(

I will say that I didn't feel like the truck was going to leave me stranded - I just had to let out of it for a while then all was well.

I am pretty certain it has to do with the programming of the upshift or something..

My honest feeling on it is that when the aftermarket tuners come out - they will probably reprogram - and that may take it away (or so I hope). My confidence that Ford will find this issue is VERY low at this point.

Come on EDGE - get those tuners done!

Common problems

1 oil overful leaking high pressure fuel into crankcase
2 Reflash doesn't help much except for shifting and rolling idle
3 Crappy fuel (no bio, bio will make engine regen often )

If you bought an 08 6.4 you will bring your vehicle back to the dealer until ford gets i right always have problems with new model year changes ever since the 7.3 . Wait until the problems are fixed. Then buy

Your point #3 is inaccurate. Bio actually lowers the Ballance Point Temp of soot which results in more passive regens. It has no affect on active regens provided it is blended with ULSD. Your point #1 is inaccurate also. An overfull crankcase has no bearing on fueling of the engine.

I do agree with waiting a year before buying a new product.

Fully understand - I am not complaining about the truck as some do - Ill deal with it - Ford will fix it - Im not stressed about it - truck hasn't stranded me (knock on wood)..
My truck lease was up - time for a new truck and look at the options...

ALL manufacturers had new motors in 07-08. Well Duramaxes LBZ was out for a year and I loved my last Duramax but GOOD GOD the designers hit it with an ugly stick!

i have 13000 on mine. Since i had 10000, every 200 or so i get BLUE smoke for about 10 to 15 seconds. No loss of power or sputtering, nothing. Smells horrible though. If i stomp on it smoke goes away until i let off.

I have 4300/miles on my '08 F250 KR, and I just had this White Smoke issue recently. Granted, that 90% of my driving is local quick hops, thus not giving my truck enough time to heat up. I assume its the regen taking place, but gone by the way side..

In any case, it doesn't matter to me. I kinda like spitting out clouds of white smoke. Too bad I can't push a button and make it happen on command.

My truck has been barfing black smoke since about 3000 miles or so. It has black residue in tailpipe, but thats when mechanic said it was probably the fuel i was buying at the stations. That was hogwash. I'm tired of bringing it in and them telling me they can't duplicate the problem. It's too much of my wasted time. I agree with you on all else. The other big complaint I have is the fuel mileage. It has gotten alot worse in time, but overall the mileage is very poor.
I had a 2000 model w/ the 7.3 that got alot better than this one. I do like the way the truck drives tho. Hopefully, they will find the solution to our problem and get it fixed.
Your DPF is cracked, and its probably going into a near constant regen now. Make them replace the DPF and clean the tail pipe, so you know if it happens again

So what you are saying, is that if you see Black Smoke, the DPF is broken and whomever should get it fixed ASAP since its most likely still under warranty?

But those with White Smoke are fine? As I read, it seems like White Smoke is normal, its just a regen that isn't regen'ing at the right temp? But nothing terrible is happening?

AlbyVA, looking at your recorded mpg's you are filling up weekly and getting 10-12 ish I'd say you do alot of intown driving, me too, this seems to create alot of regen burns, I think you are just seeing DFP crap exit the tail pipes.

Only once in 6,000 miles when I shut it off in the middle of a regen. When I restarted it cold happened at 1 mile out for a few seconds.

If you are getting black smoke out the tailpipe of at 6.4L, your diesel particulate filter is probably cracked.
