Well I am almost there. I have the 400 short block built and ready to go. I had bought some used heads that have been ported, valve job, they have some titanium retainers. The port work looks good and the heads look good over all, but heres the thing they have multi groove valves. From what I have found these are no good. I was thinking of stainless valves. What do you think.
yes, hose multigroove retainers are known for coming out of the valve notches at higher rpm, clevelands share that stroke of bad luck with the 3.8 v-6's too,
I don't think that the multi-groove valves are that bad. I ran a set for a few years on my 400 with no problem. 400s don't normally rev like a Cleveland.
yea, those valves are only bad for clevelands.......because clevelands are always, or should be built WAY too nasty for the street. lol, but seriously, clevelands are high revvers. Hence the big block style heads on a motor w/ small block displacement. Those 2V heads are an identical casting to the original heads for your 400. If they are ready to go, and slightly ported, I say go for it!
Thanks for all the help. I have desided to redo the heads with ferrea valves and new guides also retainers and keeper. Some of the work was ok on the heads but I do not want to take a chance with dropping a valve. Thanks again. Cann't wait to see what this 400 is all about.
