Locking rear end????

I have a 99 F-150 with the Off-Road package and 5.4 Triton. Is the rear-end supposed to lock up? Because sometimes it seems like it stays locked, and sometimes not. In the owners manual in the back it says traction lok rear end, but the guy who owned the pickup before me tore 20 pages out, including that one . It id an 8.8 inch rear-end with 3.73 gears. Thanks for your time

Locking rear end????

There are Limited Slip (Traction Lok) and open 8.8's. Look at the tags on the diff. If there is an "L" along with the 8.8 or ratio numbers, it is a limited slip. To test it, put the rear axle up on a pair of jackstands. Then keep trans in Park, release Parking Brake. Grab a rear wheel, and try to turn it by hand. If it is easy to turn, and the other rear wheel rotates the opposite direction (magic!), its either an open rear, or a limited slip rear with the clutch pack worn out. If its a limited slip in good condition, you will have a lot of trouble turning the wheel. The clutch in the diff is applying torque to the other axle, in effect stopping the gears in the carrier from turning, and the driveshaft is held, since the trans is in Park.
