Lurching Problem

Hello All,

I have a 97 F-150 with the 4.2 and 5spd. About a week ago, I was accelerating with traffic in 2nd and it started to lurch back and forth. It's like when you tap the gas on and off in 2nd if you have a manual gearbox. It wasn't as violent though.

At first I thought maybe it was the clutch slipping and grabbing because the truck does have 180000km on it. But today as I was turning left at a lighted intersection (Clutch in, downshifting to 2nd) my truck suddenly died and I had to pull over. It restarted fine. It actually started quicker than if I had shut it off.

So, I kinda think it may be starving for fuel. Is there a filter in the tank? I wonder if that is the cause.

So, does anyone have any thoughts before I bring it to the dealership?

Thanks
Riley

There's a screen in the fuel tank pickup under the pump, but I don't really think that would cause your problem. Usually that kind of thing will cause a loss of power at high rpm. Unless it completely blocks off the passage. I would look at a loose connection somewhere, either in the fuel supply or ignition supply areas. It only takes a little loss of fuel pressure on an injected engine to cause it to die when you least need it to.

That's just my input, I might be completely wrong.
