LAST EDITED ON 29-Oct-01 AT 05:42 PM (EST)[p]Found more info on the mystery rear-end in my 1951 F-1. I sure appreciate y'alls help so far.I beleive it must be stock. I found a patent # 201818? (couldn't make out the last digit) on the housing. #2018188 is a rear end patented in 1935 by Joseph E. Padgett and Robert P. Lewis. There is also a patent #1868818 on my housing. This # is for a U-joint also patented in the 1930's. My rear end has 10 studs threaded thru the rear cover into the housing(no nuts), A drain on the bottom approx. 1" dia. and a peep hole on the passenger side of the rear cover on the same plane as the axle and drive shaft approx. 1" in dia. Also after much scraping I DID find a tag. However I can't match it to any charts that I have found. It reads:W4712 A large "W" on your left followed by the "47" over the "12", similar to a fraction. Also there is number "12" forged upside down into the front of the center section and besides the 2 patent numbers, which are on the rear of the center section, there is 18419 (not positive on the 9) also on the rear of the center section but this isn't noted as "US PAT".
I sure hope someone can help me make heads or tails of this--
Thanks in advance!
According to your description, and looking in my 48-56 parts book, you have the stock rear that came in 51-52 F-1's. There's a pic of the rear cover and it has the plug where you describe and the lower drain plug. The parts book shows either a 3.92 or 4.72 ratios for it. If you still have the I.D. or rating plate on the glove box door, on the lower line, it has the ratio on it. You should get yourself a shop manual if you don't already have one. They're all over Ebay from $5.00 and up. Best investment you'd ever make.
According to my book, you have a '50 stock F-1 rear end. It is the only one with a 3.92:1 ratio. The 11 and 47 are numbers of teeth. (47/11=3.9166) Also, about all that praise of Ford rear ends being prefered for racers because of the extra support of the pinion...sorry, according to my picture, this rear end doesn't have an additional bearing. 8" vs. 9" - still don't know.
You have my curiosity up about my rear end, but I will post that as another message.

Yes, it's a Dana (Spicer ) rear end. Chances are, the original rear could have been changed after it blew up or I'm finding the factory books have errors and info was not included. The 48-56 parts books are full of errors. The earlier 48-55 series books are much better for accuracy.
Barry, thanks for the help--I owe ya! I started digging around about this because I have an '88 Cougar X-R7 that I'm going to start "raping" for my truck.
