Gas Mileage

Hey Y'all!
New Member. I have a 87 F-150 w/4.9 EFI, granny gear 4 spd., and 3.55"s. I would like to change to a 5spd tranny for better gas mileage and lower highway rpm's w/o losing the pulling power I have in "grandmaw". Any recommendations?

I've got a 88 F150, 300-6 5 speed. The OD is very nice, 65 mph at 2000 RPM, 16 mpg. I've got the Ford 5 speed and its 1st gear is low, but not low enough to be considered a granny gear. I can get 2nd starts with a little clutch slipping just to get the truck moving.

I have an '88 and I get about 12-13 mpg.
I think I'm going to make an EGR restrictor plate, which is supposed to help out a little.

SL
The only manual with granny & OD is the ZF S5-42, but they're rare & expen$ive. It's a popular swap anyway, so you can find articles about it by searching here & other sites.

Thanks for the fast responses. If anyone knows where I can find a "ZFS5-42" please reply. And I thought y'all would like this story.

My wife and I went to a sandstone pit with a HUGE hill that overlooked Lake of the Pines, TX last November. My truck made it all the way to the top with no problem. When we started back down, it was dark and I slipped into these huge ruts, large enough to high center the truck all the way around. We walked back home (just a couple of miles). My neighbor had a full-size '86 Chebby 4x4 w/350 and AT. He laughed when I told him what I had done, but agreed to come pull me out. He tried three or four times to get up that hill close enough to hook the 30' strap to my truck but could not. He even tried a couple of times to back up the hill, to no avail. He then asked me how fast I was going when I hit the base of the hill.
I COULD NOT CONVINCE HIM THAT ALL I DID WAS PUT HER IN LOW AND FEATHER THE THROTTLE, NOR DID HE BELIEVE I HAD MADE IT ALL THE WAY TO THE TOP AND WAS ON MY WAY BACK DOWN THE HILL!!!! Just thought it would make you smile when you know that a 2WD FORD outclimbed a 4WD CHEBBY.

SL Schenk,

You can look in the boneyards and call around at the used parts places but this is a hit and miss. I looked for about 2 months before one even came on the radar screen. I understand Phoenixparts has rebuilt. I bought my rebuilt from Transmission Exchange out of Portland, OR. After the first one developed a tick they replaced it with another one no problem. The ZFS5-42's are expensive and there is a core charge if going rebuilt. I had the same set up as you on a 1988 4.9 and after swap the mileage does not change (then again I drive faster now) but the RPM is about 2700 at 75 MPH. It seems to drive easier with the ZF without as much of a drag on the driveline as the T18. I would be glad to discuss with you everything in the swap if you want.
