hi, i have a 79 f-250 with the gas guzzlin 400/c6, and am wanting to upgrade the motor for something newer.
i was given a 91 ford bronco for free, and it has the efi 351 in it.
my question is, will this motor bolt right to my frame mounts? i think im gonna have to make a crossmember for the tranny, and probably get new drivelines built.
Look around here (maybe I'm a little biased since I also have a 79 250 with a 400), there are alot lot of options to make the 400 perform. I'm thinking that a 351w of that era is probably around 230 horse, not even close to being worth the time, effort, and money to do the swap.
Even if you got the windsor in there I don't think that your mileage would get better. Your still pushing a 70's era brick down the road.
A 351w WILL NOT bolt to your current C6. You could swap the Bronc AOD in there but there stength is questionable, especially compared to a C6.
It's a 79 Ford truck, it wasn't made for mileage, nothing will change that. I spent about one grand on a cam setup, four barrel, intake, headers, etc. I now get about the same milage as stock but, I now got over 300 ponies (better than the stock 165hp). Makes me feel a little better about the low fuel milage.
so, if i put the efi 351 in my 3/4 ton truck, i will still get about 8 miles to a gallon? i should have mentioned that the 400 has developed a bad knock, and is rather anemic.
If the 400 is toast you might try to find a 460. It will bolt up to your C6 and I belive engine mounts are not too hard to come by. I have a 97 F250 Heavy duty 351 5spd, gets the same milage as the 84 F250 - 460 - C6 that I used to have.
A friend pulled a 460 out of his 79 and put in an 86 351 trying to get better gas mileage.... he got about the same with the 351 as the 460 with a lot less power. Just got back from VA hauling a car with my son's 89 F250 with a 460. It got about 2 mpg more than my 86 F250 (351) and sure had a lot more pulling power.
Get a beater car, small truck or something to run around in that gets better mileage.
You could spend a bunch of money trying to save a little bit of money on gas,,,,,,think about that for a minute. Spend a bunch of money to save a little money on a fullsize truck that is really not designed to be a mileage king.
Little engines in little cars get good mileage, little engines in big vehicles have to work harder and really do not get any better mileage, and really struggle to move around.
Yeah find a little car or truck and spend a little time making the old truck nice, and expect it to get around 10 MPG. Could get better, but keep expactations reasonable for an older truck.
I agree with 73, if its mileage you are after, leave the truck at home. If you have to haul alot of things that don't weigh much, find an old rabbit diesel pickup( or a mini truck) 50MPG all day long for the rabbit. My rigs don't leave the house, unless I KNOW I am going to make money, and make a profit after throwing $100 away for fuel.
i have a beater that i have been driving all summer. now that winter approaches, i need my truck to do some road trips with the sled. i have seen where people swap in diesel motors, and those seem pretty cool. i just dont have the dough for that.
as for the electric pump, i have the WHOLE bronco. including gas tank. *wink*
I went from a 460ci non efi to a 89 351W efi motor (Only becasue of smog laws in CA, they will not allow a 460ci EFI motor in a F150 due to gross vehicle weight). I was tired of getting my 460 "smoged" for over $200 a pop, if you live in CA you should know what I mean. Had a local shop do the conversion, it was cheaper to buy the motor and parts though them than it was to do it my self. The conversion cost about 3K, but that included all the parts and labor. Overall I happy with the way it runs, just miss the power of the 460ci. They mileage is about the same, I get about 12mpg. My 460 used to get about 11mpg.
