My Baby's Got a New Whistle

Had to replace my turbo for an 03 turbo that didn't have the silencer ring on it. Oh man did a ever enjoy disturbing the peace with that whistle out of the exhaust.

how do you like that extra turbo lag.. not worth the "sound" in my opinion, but if you like it that's all that matters !

I love that whistle! It makes old ladies waliking their poodles give you the finger when you drive by.

Aren't silencer rings on the compressor intake? How would removing something, if anything that slightly impedes airflow change turbo spool time at all? Isn't that related to the turbine wheel and housing?

I really hadn't notice much lag at all with it. Atleast not anymore that I already had.

yes sir you are correct. but note that he put on an 03 turbo on his 06 truck. the 03 turbo has a larger turbine housing and turbine wheel (about 3mm) and less vanes, and his much more lag than the 04 up turbos.

I've heard mixed reviews about the silencer ring removal. Some claim a lot more whistle some claim they notice no difference.

I can tell you from my experiance having no silencer ring it was much louder. LVTitan, I also wanted to add, I did not put on 03 on there out of choice, Buck was taking my truck for a 2nd test drive and he heard a loud ping and the next thing we knew my turbo was shot and the only turbo that Bean could find at the shop was the 03 turbo, so I really didn't have a choice if I wanted to drive my truck home that day(which I needed to, I was going to lose money if I didn't have my truck back to use it for work). Having a louder whistle was a bonus(not to my girlfriend but to me it was), however, it was more of a necessity that it went on. Now while I have yet to experiance a noticeable lag to me, you have to know that when I start from a dead stop, even if I'm trying to beat the person next to me, I don't mesh the pedal down all the way at first get go, I let it get rolling a while then I increase it, then increase some more, then I let it go all the way, I start to lose the race for a little bit, but in the end I do win out.

To use an 03 turbo the pedestal has to be changed. The silencer ring is easily pulled from an 03. 04 and up is one piece so you would have to machine it out.

Pedestal is easy to change(in theory, gravity taking the turbo out when you have aftermarket junk in the way makes it a little harder). You just have 3 bolts for the turbo to the pedestal and then 4 bolts from the pedestal to the block. Takes about an 1.5 hrs to do the whole switch.

i got it.. yeah "mashing" is a sure way to NOT get the holeshot even on the later turbos. i'm glad you dont feel like the lag is worse, that's good news, have you noticed the extra ponies ??? probably not enough to feel with SOP dyno, but supposedly 03 setup good for 15-20ponies peak

no no problem at all bro. you'll never get your question answered if you don't ask it. that's why we're all here man, to give information when we have it, and to take the knowledge when someone else has it.
