Here is also a trick. Before you say it is ruining an engine, forget it. I've done this off and on for over 30 years, and have driven those same engines cross country with zero problems.
With the engine at least luke warm, and the oil plug open, start up engine for about 5 seconds. There is plenty of oil film on the parts. This quick start up will pump 90% of the oil out of the oil filter. The remaining oil goes into the block area and soon drains out of the oil pan.
Removing a nearly empty oil filter becomes a breeze, no drips, no runs, no errors, nobody left on base...
I had the same thing the other week on my Honda Civic...and the filter is mounted horizontally. Usually i get doused with oil, this time, it had a few tablespoons in it, if that. wondered if the ADBV was shot. was running the AAP filter.
had this happen 2x 302 engine,fram dont know why,always warm up engine before change, old school. vavles never make noise, have vavles that sweat oil if dry,dont remember what there called, work great,no vavle noise after oil change on start up,any body familer with this style vales? think Ill start using motorcraft filters.....
I can't argue with your safety or comfort reasons for draining the oil cold, but letting cold oil drain for a longer time doesn't fully address the problem. Like your laundry detergent, your oil will dissolve and suspend more dirt when it is hot and stirred up. So the bad stuff is more likely to drain.
If your clothes (or engine) aren't too dirty, or your detergent (or add pack) is a good one, the dirt will come out anyway. However, hot is always better.
