I found a 2002 F-250 SuperCrew 4WD 5.4L with 130K miles or a 2001 F-250 SuperCrew 4WD 7.3L PSD with 209K miles, either for $14,500. Currently, I have a 2003 Extended Cab 4WD Z-71 5.3L with 92K miles. The Chevy is great, rides good, runs strong, looks good, 15-17 mpg. However, we have two boys in cars seats, and more room is always good, especially for grandparents to come along comfortably. I drive about 40 miles a day during the week, maybe 11K miles a year total in the truck per year, 80% of the time I don't need a truck (but I want one), 99% of the time I don't need anything more than a 1/2-ton, but I'm working toward the occasional gooseneck transport of antique tractors or cattle. I can not do more at this point than trade even. I'm a Ford guy, I want to have a truck that I can keep and will not need a sensor replaced or some other $100 part every 6 months. Does one of these Fords look like a good option, or should I keep the Chevy? Thanks.
If you go with Super Crew you'll love all the extra room. We have two kids in car seats and the room is amazing. The grandparents like the room as well since they don't have to squeeze in when getting to the middle seat. Also, the two car seats can be put right next to each other without being cramped.
I think they are a little high on price on both, but try to look at maintanence history, because either one could eat a gob of money right away with front end parts replacement, or auto-trans rebuild. With two little boys I know money can be tight. I think if both had the same parts replaced I would go with the higher mile diesel.
No way I'd consider the 5.4l for a Crew Cab, never should have been offered IMO. The crew cab has tons of room. I wouldn't even consider the 5.4l unless it had 4:30s.
Price on the 5.4l seems a high. Depends on the condition there in.
I'd keep looking, maybe find something newer with less miles.
I went and looked at the trucks. The Powerstroke was in the shop, and the 5.4L wasn't what it needed to be. After looking at the trucks, it seems like my Chevy got nicer. I'll keep my eyes open. Thanks for the help.
