I have a 1999 7.3 and I heard that you can gain mpg by removing the intake heater. Is this true? If so, I would like to screw a boost gauge into the empty hole. Do I need a special fitting? What do I do with the heater wires?

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
There is a plug that is available at a vendor somewhere that has the port already installed. Simply unscrew the heater and install the plug. Then attach the boost gauge line to it.
What I did was to remove the entire Y-pipe from the engine and work on it on the bench.
I removed the heater plug, hacksawed the element off, reinstalled the now blank plug back onto the Y-pipe. Then I drilled and tapped for a fitting next to it and ran a line from there.
It's more work than buying that adapter plug, but I had extra time that day and no plug, so I did what was necessary to get the job done and it works.
ITP diesel Dieselsite, PDP , they all have plug with boost adapter that goes in to the AIH hole. i dont know if you get better fuel economy, maybe a slight one? dont count on much.
and the wires you just compleetly remove.
