I have a set of '63 406 6v heads with casting #C3AE-C. There has not been any machine work done to them. They were removed from the original motor and stored on a shelf since then. Can anyone tell me what they would be worth if I decide to sell them later?
Rail- they might bring 50$$ for the pair, tops. Sorry. The only way you can get some more is if you happen to find a guy doing a numbers correct restoration of a '63. Ford redesigned the intake ports in 64, the heads some guys want are the C3AE-J's. Anyway, the heads you have use the smallest combustion chamber of any FE, 61 cc's, if you wanted more compression on what ever you are running, they will help. Most 390's have heads with 68-72 cc's. Your heads also have the larger 1.65 exhausts, which makes breathing a little easier. DF
DF,
A friend of mine gave me a telephone number to a company called Dove Industries, they specialize in FE parts and motors. Called them last week and the guy I talked to said the C3AE-C heads are rare and highly sought after due to the small cambers and larger intake ports and exhast valves. He also told me they are basicly the same head as the 427LR head of the mid to late '60's, also rare and highly sought after. He told my to clean them up and take them to a swap meet and ask about $250 for them. He said that was a fair price for "virgin" C3AE-C 406 FE heads. He said someone wanting to build a high perf. FE will jump on that deal.
Are you sure that Dove didn't mean for them to buy the heads for $50 and they would turn around sell them at a swap meet for $250. We all need to have places like Dove to keep carrying our FE parts but the do tend to be high with their pricing. Third hand info sometimes gets distorted so maybe you should give Dove a call and ak them the same question. The big FE trend now is to buy Edelbrocks FE aluminum heads for about $1200. By the time you buy some steel ones and have them modified al you'll have is some old redone steel low flowing heads for a total cost of close to $1200.
Rail- I prefer the 'J' casting or some of the 70's truck heads with the smaller intake port, I believe that the smaller port has better cylinder filling from the higher velocity. My opinions may be somewhat skewed by the fact that I do some part time work at a friends engine shop and can always add larger valves or do some porting for a lot less $$ than if I had to pay someone to do it for me. But if some some fellows are looking for the old heads and are willing to pay for them, I may just have to clean out my garage and see whats in there. DF
