I have a 2004 F350 C.C., 6.0 turbo diesel with 45K miles. Some of the add ons are 5 inch exhaust, K&N cold air intake and an edge attitude with juice, a pretty modest setup I think. The other day I was going down the road an a guy in a 05 or 06 Chev duramax passed next to me and it was obvious he had the edge also, I saw the controller, he got in front of me and put his foot into it and his truck dumped all this black smoke. My truck has never dumped smoke like that, I've never seen black smoke come out of my exhaust, is there a reason Chev dumps smoke like that and (my) Ford doesn't? If you know, I'm curious.
if i put my edge on 4 it will dump black even on 3, but your right i see dodges just dump tons of it, lol i want a file to be written for me that just dumps black smoke
Here is another thing about smoke, it's wasted horsepower. Would you rather be dumping smoke all over the place or would you rather be passing them while they are dumping smoke? I equate dumping smoke with all bark and no bite. People know you have something on there, but it still takes you awhile to get anywhere. But to answer your question, your edge sould be dumping the fuel at higher settings, if your at higher settings then you must not be on the throttle enough in order for it to dump.
Dumpin smoke doesn't mean wasted horsepower. It could mean the turbo hasn't spooled up yet. When I mash the motor in my truck, I dump black smoke, but soon as the turbo catches up it's nearly clear.
To the OP, get rid of the edge and pick up an SCT before you regret it!

That's right, meaning you have more fuel and not enough air, which means you don't have as much horsepower as you could have until your air input matches your fuel input. So when you dump you have wasted fuel, and that's half the equation for horsepower and thus you have wasted horsepower.
well i guess for me i would rather have smoke bc my truck is heavy and its not a race car, i like it bc its big, i wish i could just dumb smoke on level one since i hardly ever use my edge past that setting lol
sounds to me like your edge may be set to economy, you have more than one setting right?? it should smoke when you stomp on it im a race tune, BTW you should be worried about smoking the chevy not the atmosphere...and get an SCT to do it with.

I fail to see how running more fuel is wasted horsepower. Using less fuel will not gain you any more horsepower. By your rationale cutting the fuel input would yield more horsepower, which is not true.
I guess all the competition diesel guys don't know that they are wasting all that horsepower when running the 1/4 mile?
