The GT designation to the best of my knowledge referred to the engines & cars that came with the hipo option package, I believe they only came in cars, not trucks, generally in the 60's. I may be incorrect there though. If you do have one of these hipo engines its a great find. Just tell your buddies the GT stands for Got Turbo?
I don't have a 390GT. (or a 390) It's the motor I want in my truck. Before I buy a 390 I was wanting to know if a GT was the better 390 motor...............Ron
I used to chat with a guy who spun a 390GT to 8200RPM when he was drag racing them, it obviously had a different cam, and he said he stopped because he was "young and stupid" but still the 390GT is a very good engine
I have a truck that came with GT heads when I bought it. After looking at the specs on the GT heads (cc's port dimensions, valve sizes) I found that the only real difference is the different exhaust manifold bolt holes. And w/ a clutch in my truck the drivers side GT manifold didn't really clear the clutch linkage. I replaced my GT heads and manifolds w/ standard truck castings. GT's were in Mustangs,Cougars, Fairlanes, Comets Ranchero's. Cars that had tight engine bays where the standard FE exhaust manifolds wouldn't clear the shock towers. Consider that in say a Fairlane, the difference between a 289 and a 390... so the 390 is made to sound like a hotrod and designated GT... or GTA in the Mustang it was in. I got my head info from Steve Christs, How to Rebuild a BigBlock Ford.
