390 or 360???

390 or 360???
I saw your post over on the other section and noticed you said it was in a 4x4. If I'm not mistaken, Ford either didn't offer the 390 in the 4wd's or if they did, it was very rare. If the motor is original then it is most likely a 360. The only sure way to tell is to measure the stroke with one of the spark plugs removed (should do #1 that way you know exactly when you're at TC). The 360 has a 3.5" stroke and the 390 has a 3.78" stroke. Stick a wooden rod in and measure from top to bottom.

I know you don't want to tear down the motor. What about exposing the rear crank flange where the flexplate, or flywheel is bolted? If you can see that you can tell for sure. A 360 has a big half moon cutout on the perimeter or the flange, and 390 has a smaller square notch.
