hey all. i have a 1990 f150 4x4 5.8 auto e4od,4.5 in lift 35 in tires and 3.55 gears.. i recently drained trans etc put new fluid, filter etc but i overfilled it. worked great, smooth shifts etc. always a little doggy with the tires and gears but anyway i was pulling my camper home for winter and its not a big camper about the same length as the truck but after about 30 minutes it "spit" out trans fluid all over the exhaust and smoke was rolling etc. my girl was folling me and she freaked when i stopped and jumped out. i though for sure i screwed up my tranny .i let it sit for a few minutes and then drove it home, everything seemed fine. i did get a check engine light on. so this morning i check it out and tranny a little low added a little fluid. i went to pull codes and no matter what i did i couldnt pull codes. i cleaned the connections several times and still nothing. two questions here. did i screw up tranny? and why cant i get the codes to work? i drove it and everything seemed fine and the cel was off. any ideas? thanks
Transmission fluid expands as it gets hot, if its not leaking now then you likely just overheated it and with it being overfilled if just puked some out. I'd watch it for leaks for a few days, especially around the front seal. I don't think I would make a habit of towing much of anything with 35's and 3.55 gears, your not doing your tranny any favors. There is a definate correlation between tranny life expectancy and heat and it doesn't take long for a overheated automatic tranny to die. At the very least I would invest in a good transmission cooler but seriously consider regearing if you want to keep 35's or start saving money now for tranny repairs.
yes i figured towing would be (and is) tough. i will be putting a trans cooler on real soon. i drove her today and everything seemed fine ,parked on pavement etc and seen no leaks(yet). thanks for the input.
