Alrighty guys. We got three F-150 that we lease to my fathers Engineering company and have not had any problems with them(2 05's & 1 06) . I was just talking to him after telling him about a service appointment I got for his diesel and he informed me that they had to take one of the 05's in for work.
Well supposedly they took the truck to our local oil changing place( very nice place with excellent guys working on the truck) and he said there was some metal shavings on the inside of the tire. Well they took it to the Ford dealer and they informed us that it needed new tie rods, new ball joints, new brakes (only 2mm left), and the catalytic converter needed to be replaced.
They truck only has 43k on it and I will say it is not the easiest driven truck (basically a normal work truck) and does not tow nothing but a 16ft Carolina skiff every once and a while. A course everything is out of warranty expect the catalytic converter.
So has anyone else had anything like this happen? I know stuff wears out and all but it sure seems a little early for this. I will check it out at the dealer on Thursday because it is about an hour away and I will be taking the diesel there on that day and see what is going on. Hopefully with the amount of vehicles we buy from them they will cut us some slack on the price but I'm wont be surprised if they don't.
Dad even went as far to say he might have to get a dodge if the fords aren't tough enough. I just laughed and told him if they drive trucks this hard to have this happen on a Ford the dodge would of probably dropped a whole axle off on the side of the road somewhere. Sorry about all the typing I guess I just needed to get it off my chest.
The catalytic convertor is part of federal mandated emissions equipment, and is covered for 75k miles. Do not let them tell you otherwise if they decide to not cover it.
I've wored at diff. co. with fleet trucks. They take a beating. The brakes could easily be worn by then. My ball joints went at about 60 and I baby my truck. So I could see that at 43 on a work truck. It's still early but they are known for it. cats already been addressed. Maybe someone else can address the tie rods. I'm sure you Dad Is a bottom line guy. Tell him nothing holds it's value like a Ford truck.

I am already showed him my paperwork beucase we got to sell a couple of the trucks and get new ones ( we keep them for three years) and showed him that we were upside down in the two Chevy's we lease him that had 0% but could make money off of the F150's and f250's if we sold them now. I guess I was just surprised at only 40k that stuff would go wrong but the other ones are still going great.
Just reading these threads really points out how differently things wear out. One guy has gone thru 4 window regulators, most others none. I worked with a guy that his personal vehicle was a little sports car. At work he drove a suburban. He went thru 3 complete sets of brakes in maybe 6 months. Rotors and everything. I drove with him. He didn't change his driving habits at all. They finally took the truck away after the 3 rd time. another guy, his right tires were always across the white line, falling off the side of the road, and hitting every pot hole. Anyway. Good Luck.
