My 00 EB which has 158,000 miles has started to shudder when it shifts up from 2nd to 3rd gear. It feels and sounds exactly like I am driving over a very small set of rumble strips. The harder I am accelorating the harder the shudder is. It shudders for about a second. I haven't noticed any other driveability problems.

I have a similar thing happening to my 00 EXP. I have changed all plugs, EGR lines etc. and no codes popping. I would tend to beleive that it is tranny related. Let me know what you find out.
Also drain and replace the 2 qt ATF for the transfer case, I drained all the fluid on my drive train and that was the dirtiest one after about 25k - I come to believe it may be the one causing similar symptom as yours since all others looks good (ATF was still pink and not burned, the diff oils for both front and rear are still good based on color and visual quality). As a precaution, make sure you can unplug the fill plug before you remove the drain plug to make sure you can fill it up again (some people have trouble removing the fill plug, I heard). I don't have the "rumbling strip" symptoms anymore after that, and have since regularly flush the transfer case every two oil change (about 7.5 - 8k interval).
My tranny was doing the same thing, a slight shudder at about 50-60 mph when shifting into od. I added a drain plug to my pan, changed the fluid and filter, problem fixed or so I thought. About 6000 miles it came back. So I would change the tranny fluid about 4 times a year. Recently it was going only about 3000 miles. Finally, actually yesterday the shuddering started and now wont go away even after complete fluid change. I am prepping to do a torque converter change. I got a price of 250.00 if I supply the new torque converter. Not bad but I may try to do it myself. Anyone changed just the t/c on a 2wd 4.6 with the 4r70w???
I have an 4R100 in my 99 with a 5.4, 147K on the unit. I have installed an inline filter in the return line from the tramission cooler also have an air to oil cooler. Back to the transmission, I use a 15 micron spin on (AMSOIL filter). I just changed the fluid and filter after 140K miles and have experienced another NO problems 10K since. MAINTENANCE with GOOD products has its benifits.
Same issue, get your tranny flushed, my Ford dealer did it for 175, I think, been awhile, but took the shudder away, in worse csae thou, my 01 F150 had to have its Converter replaced, went to long with bad fluid I guess, plus towing all of its life before I got it didnt help....
Wow, I had forgotten how long ago this shudder problem reared its head. I now have 224,000 miles on my exp and have, until now been able to get rid of the shudder with ATF flushes (about every 30,000 miles). But now I fear my TC might really be on its last leg. I flushed my ATF 6,000 miles ago and the shudder has already come back. I have been thinking about putting a tube of Dr. Tranny shudder guard in just to see if it helps. What are you guys thoughts on this? If I do end up having to replace the TC, how much should I expect to have to pay to have it done? Is it a DIY project for a fairly handy shade tree mech?
I would do it myself. It is a lot of labor, especially on a 4wd, and that is going to cost you. To DIY you may want the help of a friend because the trans is going to be really heavy. A trans jack would be a good investment, they make some that fit on a floor jack if you have to do this with the wheels on the ground. There is nothing technically difficult about it, but it is a fair amount of wrenching, some of it in tight quarters.

Anyone have any idea what this could be?
I have a '97 that does the same thing it has 562,000 miles on it and my '01 EBE does it too it has 378,000 miles on it. Granted they both have the V8 5.0L motor and matching transmission. I also have an '04 Expedition that has the V8 5.4L Tritan I recently purchased and it also does the same it has never became an issue with any of mine unless you just feel like throwing money at it I've not had any work on the transmissions on any of mine unless it becomes more prevalent I wouldn't worry I have over a million miles on mine combined and wouldn't let any of mine go all 3 still run like a work horse and have changed my die hard Chevy husband into a Ford promotor.
