Last I heard was 3400 for a BTS, but that may have been with valve body deduction. But in any event I would go with BTS over anything considering all the stuff I have read around here, it' what I will go with if my stock one ever goes.
Well, I got all the info and decided my best route for now was the Ford reman. $3432.01 installed for the trans and a new trans cooler which I wanted installed (cost an additional $125 ish)- I was suprized that Ford wasn't going to. 3 yr 75k warranty which will take me to 186k miles.
I called BTS and the soonest I would have got a build date was Nov. 13. Their price was $3800 plus shipping which turned out to be $500 both ways to northern MN. Total estimate with BTS's trans cooler package and install, transmission and install, and freight would have run me $5700 give or take.
Thanks for all the help guys, it is as always greatly appreciated. I really wanted the BTS, but a month wait and geting close to double the price I couldn't justify the price especially since i'm not running high hp, towing heavy, or running big tires. Thanks again!
Most dealerships do not work on transmission any more. If it isn't a simple problem, they recommend you R&R the transmission. Easier for them but it could cost you a lot more money.
I would have tried a transmission shop before letting the stealership replace your transmission.
I would have checked local transmission shops, but two things kept me from that. First, I'm currently living in Bemidji MN, a town of 10k people, and there isn't anything for reputable transmission shops here. The next town that is any bigger to the north is Winnipeg, CA, Grand Rapids 65 miles to the east, Brainerd, MN 120 miles to the south, and Grand Forks, ND 120 miles to the west.
Second, I had plenty of aluminum chips in the fluid, it would have been a gamble on the condition on the transmission housing.
I really like Jasper for the 4r100. Great warranty too. Last I checked, you could get a jasper 4r100 with heavy duty billet 3 disc converter and a HD shift calibration for around $2500. 3yr 75k warranty across the country. Get the extended service for $100 or so, covers full labor cost at shops that have higher labor than jasper normally pays.
I bet the ford has a standard t/c still at the very least.

Nope, just did a search on transmission shops in Bemidji. Had it been me, I would have taken my truck there. In the smaller towns a shop like that cannot survive unless it has decent service.
But it's water under the bridge since you're already going with the FOMOCO rebuilt. I hope you get your truck back on the road soon.
Trucks on the road already. The point I was trying to make was I've been living here for 4 years, and unfortunately I'd trust the Ford store to work on my truck more than anywhere else. It's hard enough letting anybody else work on it but me, but time and current facility restrictions mandated it. If I was down in the metro Twin Cities area, it would definately have been a sifferent story, there are many well known drivetrain shops down there. Thanks for all the input/ help.
Natewoz , Did the trans shop give you an explanation of what failed ?
I also lost third gear out of the blue with no indication it was going to fail and when it did fail there was no code from the PCM even . I have an '01 Diesel LB CC w/98,000 mi. and my rebuild cost me $2200 includung a new converter with a billet hub .
I tow some pretty heavy load's so i made it a point to have my tranny serviced every 30,000 mi. . When i took it down to the shop my tranny guy expalined to me that in '01 Ford used a ratcheting type sprag in these transmission's and every one that he has seen come in had failed/broken . So upon the tear down i inspected the removed part's and sure enough that was the culprit . I continued to ask him if it is worth it to continue my servicing habit's and he replied " absolutely , you're transmission look's fantastic inside with the exception of the noted failure " . So in closing , if you have an '01 you should probably expect this failure if you have'nt already ( provided that this is an accurate statement from my trans man ) .
