I just completed a 1 ton front end swap in the 250. It is shaking and is continuely getting worse the more I drive it. I tightened my steering box and have a 350 type of steering. I dont have any more dampners, however I dont believe I need them anymore.
Heres what happens, I get up to speed and slow down it starts to wobble and as soon as I slow up it shakes and jumps violently. Once I feel it coming it continuely gets worse until I have to pull over.
I have a ball joint dana 60 with the 350 style crossover steering. I believe it is my left ball joints. I can tell the vibrations are coming from that side. Would ball joints cause this. I need help and fast.
You can check your ball joint by jacking the tire off the ground, wedging a long solid metal rod under the tire and lifting up and down on it. There should be little to NO MOVEMENT.
the sector shaft on the steering box.
death wobble will snap the sector shaft.
i know, i had to replace 3 steering boxes before i got the death wobble fixed.
i fixed it be replacing the stock "A" shackles with "H" shackles, and all new bushings in the shocks and springs.
I dont even know that my leaf springs have bushings. I would imagine that the bearings were reused. And I dont understand what you are saying about the sector shaft.
Hahaha they better have bushings!!! The leaf spring bushings should be at the ends of the leaves where they bolt up to the shackles, there should be a rubber (or polyurethane, if aftermarket) bushing between the cross bolt and the shackle. If there is no bushing then you have definitely found your shake.
the sector shaft is the thing that comes out of the bottom of the steering box, that the pitman arm connects to. death wobble will split the shaft on both the vertical and horizontal lines over time.
i have never had one drop off while on the road, but the one that split on the horizontal dropped the pitman arm as i went to take it off. i put the socket on the nut to remove it, and the pitman arm came off the box. i was thinking what the heck?? then i realized the lower section of the shaft was still in the pitman arm.
that was when i replaced all the bushings and shackles.
and i have not had any problem in over 55,000 miles.
I found out that one of my bushings on the front left spring had dryrotted out. Ordered a set of leaf spring bushings, hopefully they will cover it. They are the polyurethane ones, maybe my ride quality will improve some.
