If you are worried about single points floating then you had better kill the idea of dual points. Because points are points and they all float. that is part of why all car manufactures went to electronic distributors. Other reasons are no points to burn, no condenser to go bad and a little bushing ware doesn’t stop them from running. They also have a hotter spark so they will start easier and run better. Racers know the magnetos are better then points and electronic is better then magnetos.
thats true, but I don't want any electronics other than a stereo on/in my vehicles
Point "bounce" (not float) rpm depended too on what or whose points you were running. Accell made single points in at least three spring weights. I ran singles on my 390 and 427, then tried a dual point Mallory (for about a month) then went back to the single, with Accell medium weight points, it was good to 6500-7000. Going heavier would have increased the bounce point, but at the expense of the life of the plastic cam follower. No way a 3.8 V6 distributor interchanges with a V8, the difference is the number of cam lobes on the rotor shaft. A dual point V8 unit has 4 lobes, a 6 banger will have 6. A single point V8 has 8 lobes.

'bounce" thank you that was the word I was looking for.
what part of the dual point Mallory dident you like?

what part of the dual point Mallory didn't you like?
Trying to get both points set correctly and the fact that it didn't perform any different/better than the single point distributor. Big waste of my time. Now a day, I just use a points distributor with a Pertronix I or II or Crane XR-1, a 45-50,000 volt coil, small to large cap adapter and Ford Racing's 9 mm wires. This is good to 7500 rpms. My 77 Comet has a Duraspark, only because that's what it came with. No more points for me til some one sets off a nuke.

then what was all the hype of duel points, on HIPO cars back in the day?
They allowed higher rpms as far as I know. I think some types allowed longer dwell times to maximize the spark. Seems like there are/were two types of dual point distributors, the difference was in their operation if I recall. I don't remember where I heard or read that, but it was on a forum.
that was the impression that I had, that they allowed higher rpms. But you said that you had singles run up to 7000 thats all I need. I just wanna be able to pull to 6,500 when I want
To get to 7 grand, get quality points from either Accell or Mallory. I assume they still make em. Forget it with parts house stuff, unless you just want to rev limit the motor.

Accell still makes them, didn't see a listing for Malory though.
