I got a duel piont mallery dizy out of a 72 390 this weekend. and I was thinking of installing it in my ride. What is the advantage of useing this dizzy and do you know if it will work with my msd 6 box ..
fun in minnesota
Dual point dist. give you a longer dwell for a hotter spark. Not much point using it with the MSD box at it already does that. Down side is you would lose vacuum advance which will hurt gas mileage. I used dual point units back when the electronic units were just showing up and the dual points were simple and proven to work. They can also be tripped out to give you more total timing advance (I used 44°) in the lower gears for better acceleration and than drop back to 38° for high gear so as not fry a piston.
Thanks for the info Bear , The dizy has a vacume advance on it. I just fired it up and all runs well.
I canot tell a differnce yet, but it is to hot today to give it a real try.
Will let you know how it goes with and with out the msd box hooked up.
You know sometimes we just have to play with these fe for fun!!!
The MSD instructions says to remove one set of points(since it really only is to fire MSD and you don't need both set for dwell timing). Mine ran fine with BOTH sets of points installed. Ran it for a number of years til I finally got a Mallory Unilite conversion installed instead.
The MSD system fires when the points open and dwell does not effect the spark lduration or voltage. So the single point works as well as the dual does.
