I bought a set of Halarld Sharp roller rockers with the hardened shafts to install into a 390 that I was building. The plan was to use a mechanical lift cam and really build the engine up to install in my old pickup. Well that was back when gas was very cheap and needless to say now I don’t think I need to make that much of a hotrod.
My question is has any one installed these on hydraulic lifter cams? The instructions said you could, you had to have push rods that would work with the adjusting screw on the rockers but then it sounds like a long process to get them adjusted to work with the hydraulic lifters. Hence the reason originally I was just going to use a solid lifter cam. I have the parts sitting in my garage and would like to use them but I was wondering just how hard and long it takes to adjust them with a hydraulic lifter cam.
I have them on my FE. The hyd adj is pretty easy. You just get the rocker/cam/crank in the correct position, then you remove the pay + 1? turn. Need to check what your hyd require. Not much difference with solids. The adj are good and solid. never had a problem with them moving.
Did you re use your stock rocker stands or did you also buy the ones that Harland Sharp offer? I only went with the shaft and rocker arms from them and was going to use stock stands as long as they did not have any play in them.
Did you go with stock Ford push rods for a mechanical lifter cam or something different?
That is good to know that it was not that bad to install with hyd lifters.
I used the stock stands. I do not remember if my cam kit came with rods. I think I had to purchase rods seperately. The rods have a cup on the rocker end to fit the ball adj screw. My hyd lifters are variable lift. All adjustments were done on the rocker pushrod screws. Hyd adjustments are like solids. You find zero lash then set the clearance. With Hyd you find zero lash then you compress the hyd lifter more. I think mine were 3/4" turn.
I'm over 700K miles with FPP adjustable roller tip rockers that require their ball/cup rods with Crane's anti pump up lifters. Preloaded at .025" with iron 427 LR stands that grip thick walled shafts, trouble free at 19 1/2 years service.
