Ok, I have a 2000 Expedition Eddie Bauer 5.4L and the service engine light soon has been on, so I finally got to Advanced Auto tonight and they plugged their computer in and got code P1405. Can anyone tell me what that means.? Thanks, Brian
Thanks Todd for your response. Now, can anyone tell me where and what specifcally to look for. Sorry, but I am not a mechanic but with your help, I think I can pull this one off myself. Thanks again, Brian
actually that sensor might be metal not black plastic
just cleaned out my dpfe sensor the other day day
easy to do and yes one outlet was almost choked shut
cleaned out w/ a pipe cleaner and brake clean
good as new
O.k. I hate to be a pain in the you know what, but can someone give me specific details as to where this box and hoses are. I spent an hour under the hood last night and I can not figure out where it is. Thanks. Brian
A picture would work wonders, but a description will have to do. Remove the plastic cover that covers the thottle body area (The one that says Triton 5.4). On the drivers side, back towards the firewall you'll see the silver flying saucer shape of the EGR valve. Directly in front of that will be the DPFE. It is rectangular will have an electrical connector on the side. You'll also see on the bottom side, the two rubber hoses that will connect to the exhaust tube for the EGR. Those hoses will be what you want to check to make sure they are not loose or cracked. And like dr. cabela stated, the DPFE itself could be clogged, as well as an obstruction at the exhaust tube.
Todd, thanks alot, I believe with your descriptions I can go home tonight and find these things and check them out and repair if needed. I did not take that cover off that says triton 5.4 no wonder I couldn't find anything. Anyway, thanks again for your help. Brian
Todd, O.k. I found the df thing. Sure was easy once the top cover was off. anyway, the hose towards the firewall was brittle and broke off. was not even on the valve anymore. My next question. Is this some sort of specific hose or what? It looks like a piece of fuel line. Any ideas what I can use. I am leaving thursday for the weekend and pulling the camper so I would like to fix this thing before I go but don't know if I will have time to get to a ford dealer. Again, thanks for all your help. It is greatly appreciated. Brian
...the hose towards the firewall was brittle and broke off.
BINGO! That's exactly what the code said to check.
The hose is a high temp compound that is capable of withstanding the high temps under the hood. If you use generic hose material, you'll just have to replace it frequently. I'd look for some silicone tubing or stop by the dealership.
I'd just unplug the DPFE sensor and go on the trip and ignore the light until you get back and have time to mess with it. Other than the light being on, you won't notice any other issues.
