I am currently looking at getting a used Explorer between 2004 and 2006. I am very interested to hear any comments about the difference between the 4.0 6 cylinder and the 4.6 V8... mpg, power etc. I live at relatively high elevation and enjoy having adequate power while driving in the mountains. Also, are there any specific years or options to stay away from? How about recalls or common problems?
I have an 05 4.0 V6 FFV Explorer and it has 38k on it with no problems other than pesky advantrac warning which dealer replaced the cluster and it still flashes intermittingly. Gets around 15 in town and around 20-21 on highway. Power wise it is decent.
I have a 04' Explorer NBX with the 4.6, 3:73's in it,,I tell ya,,this rig will set ya back in the seat from a start if you hammer it,,,she runs good !
But now the trans is acting kinda weird, 25k on it,usually when its gold,,almost like its low on tranny fluid,,,,,But theres NO DIPSTICK for the tranny !!! Its a 5 speed auto, runs great,,my GF drives it mostly..shes seen over 17 mpg, and thats mostly around town,,but her foot is lighter then mine. I like the truck,,alittle small,,not to bad, but came out of a 97' Expedition,,which was a nice ride too,,and even that got over 15 mpg on a trip, w/the 5.4. My Bro-in-law had a 97' Explorer with over 250 k on it, when he sold it,,had the 4.0 in it, had the transfer case replaced once,,that it.
I've got a 05 4.0. I also suffer from the check advancetrack. We get 18-19 highway. Got 20 on the interstate goming back from the beach. Tranny sucks. I wouldn't have another one. my .02
My wife drives a 04 4.6l v8 most of our problems have been electrical power windows and stero speakers. the vehicle is a blast to drive its more like a sports car than a truck and my wife gets about 20 mpg when she drives I get about 18.5
05 4.6 AWD mounty 25k flawless. 21 mph on the flat. Junk tires. Gonna get new one's soon.
Paid 18,900 last month you can get them all day for close to that...
Thanks for all the comments. Much appreciated
Anybody else want to comment? I'm quite interested to hear about the power (or lack of it) with the 4.0 as we see quite a few available.
Thanks again
I would suggest the 4.6. Around our areas, you will benefit from it a lot more than the 4.0. You won't see that much difference in mpg (maybe 1-2), but especially at our altitude, the 4.6 holds its power better than the 4.0. I've driven both around town and know some people with both. I would be willing to bet the reason you are seeing so many 4.0's around is the same reason the people I know with the 4.0 want the 4.6...
The 4.6 will pull Parley's a hell of a lot better then the 4.0 anyday of the week. I've pulled it in both and the 4.6 doesn't work as hard as the 4.0.
Can I suggest taking one of the 4.0's out for a ride, then you are more than welcome to come by and you can drive my Sport Trac with the 4.6 and see what you think...
I'm not knocking the 4.0 by any means - it is still a good engine. But if I had my choice, I would take the 4.6 anyday...
You should watch out for the 04-06 Ford Explorer, I have an 06 Eddie Bauer w/ 4.6 V8 6spd auto, We have had the truck for 7 months and had it in an out of the shop for transmission surge shifting and have called FoMoCo and had them test it and the only answer we get is to replace a module and flash the computer. it works for a couple of weeks and then back to the same, We called again and they state they are aware of the problem and there engineers are working on it, but don't know how long it will take to solve.
Thanks for all the comments: I found a loaded 03 Limited including V8, leather, moon roof etc with 59,000 miles in excellent condition and so I bought it! Looks great, rides and drives fantastic plus the price was right
