i have a 2000 f-150 and recently was driving it on the interstate at about 75 mph for a long period of time. the overdrive light on the shift column begin to flash on and off. what is the cause of this and how can it be fixed. i have around 107,000 miles on the truck and it is 4x4.
thanks for the help in advance.
It could be something relatively simple but there is a code stored in the computer now from the light flashing. Have it read and then you'll know what it needs.
When the OD light flashes that indicates the computer is logging errors. Could be any of a whole bunch of different things, so you need to get it scanned to get the exact error code(s)...
Do those parts "soft fail"? A complete failure of the speed sensor would be obvious as the speedometer would not be working, right?
Yes. My speedo worked fine, but the plastic gear caused my o/d light to flash (setting a VSS sensor code) because the factory gear is loose and jumps teeth.
I replaced the VSS twice and was at a loss. The tranny shop wanted to tear down my tranny. Then I found that gear...
Ford made an updated tighter one you can get at the dealer for around $10-$20.

Cool - I've been chasing a tranny problem that throws a VSS code, but I hadn't bothered with the sensor as my speedometer was rock solid. I'll look into that now though, based on your experience. Thanks for the tip!
I found a TSB for the '97 which mentions that (TSB 98-5-8), but it only lists the 97 F250 light duty, not the heavy duty that I have. But I think I'll swing by the dealer and ask a couple of questions - sounds like too good match to ignore...
thanks for all the input. I will try locating the speed sensor and gear and try changing them. hopefully this will fix my problems. to read the code will a hand held obd tester read this code or will it have to be taken to the garage?

No it will not read it. Take it to a tranny shop and pay them $20 to pull the code. Even if the light is not flashing, the code should be stored.
The VSS is located on the tailshaft housing of your transfer case. It is pretty easy to find. THe plastic gear is inside. You can stick your finger in the VSS hole and feel it.
Any scan tool that supports "enhanced" or "manufacturer's" codes will read the tranny fault codes. The el-cheapos won't. Consult the owner's manual for the scanner to see what it's capable of.
