Point Gap??

I was just wanting to know what the point gap would be for a 66 390. I've kinda just guessed on my truck and was curious as to what it really should be.
thanks,

Point Gap??

Points, what are those? Just going by my foggy memory I believe the gap was .017” and the dwell 26-31 degrees.

Jeremy, what are you doing with points?! Throw them out and get a pertronics ignitor or a duraspark ! Barry's memory is pretty good though, I have vague memories of setting points @ 018, but that was back in high school, when cars still had them new. There is no reason on earth for anyone to run them anymore. DF

I can think of only one reason not to convert to an electronic ignition- MONEY and right now I have precious little of that magical green stuff. When I can finallly get my finacial situation to a higher level than a Duraspark is definatly in my trucks future, until then us poor old slobs have to make due w/ those horrid little points.

Hey, I have a dial indicator style point tension gauge by Sun you can borrow. Also, don’t forget the rubbing block will wear approximately .001” for every 1000 miles. Ah, it’s all coming back now...

BBB's foggy memories are pretty clear here. I bought the pertronix kit last fall because I got tired of messing around with the points. You are best off setting them with a dwell meter (since dwell is actually what you are after, not clearance. You could set the clearance correctly and still be ovv on dwell). Then check the timing and reset it if necessary, since greater dwell means more spark advance. I've actually had situations where I changed the points and set the dwell very carefully and it made my car ping because it . . . oh, just get the Pertronix kit and be done with it!
