I changed my front disk pads yesterday for the first time since buying my truck and one of my rotors is shot. What do you guys recommend for upgraded rotors? What is involved for getting the existing rotors off? Thanks, Eirik
I just get rotors from Napa. I don't know if there are any performance rotor for our trucks. To get the rotors off you need to remove the calipers, and the hubs (assuming 4wd) need to come off. then you can get to the wheel bearings which need to be removed then the whole hub/rotor can be taken off the axle. then you need to use a large hammer to pound out the wheel studs. then the rotor will come off with some more pounding. The new one will go back on and pound the studs back in. just make sure everything is seated properly. Then reassemble.
I have used rotors from NAPA also and they worked fine, but after doing the brakes on my trucks for 15 years I have found that the most importants thing to do to keep them from warping is to torque the lug nuts down in the proper order. I had a guy put my wheels back on at a tire shop one time and he went around in a circle tightening the lug nuts. Next thing you know my rotors are warped.
Brembo makes drilled, slotted and cryogenically treated rotors. ~$300 for the pair the last time I checked. Good thing to have if you tow heavy coming down a mountain and loose your trailer BRAKES. OMG!
Thanks for your replies guys!!
I like the idea of the drilled, slotted ones since I mainly use this truck to pull our trailor. Ill Google Brembo and see waht they have. In order to remove the hubs (it is four wheel) I need the big hub nut socket right? Ive never removed a four wheel drive hub so work with me here. Is there anything I need to look out for in the process? I dont want to break something due to stupidity.
the sp's are $240 from dieselfiltersonline.com which i belive there a sponsor too
i run the diamond slots, i didnt get the cross drilled since the last cross drilled rotor i had problems with them cracking. sp told me they would garuntee the drilled ones from cracking since they bevel the holes to relive the edge stress. but they didnt have them in stock so i just got the diamond slots and i love them. and i run them with hawk pads
Thanks for your replies guys!!

Do you have auto locking hubs or manuals?
You'll need a special hub nut socket to get the torque done correctly, you can get it apart with a screwdriver and hammer. Take the nut with you to a mega-auto part stores, they rent them for free. Some
have the right one....some don't.
