Ball Joints

Hi, New here, I have a '01 F250 Crew, SB, 2WD, 7.3 diesel, 84K miles.

I've been told I need a new upper, passeger side, ball joint. A couple of questions........

Service place recomended I replace the lower as well (Since they would have it all apart.) Good Idea?

Also recommended up-graded parts, vs standard. Claim lifetime warranty.
Good Idea, True?

They are calling me this AM with a price, once they get a quote on the parts. Rough estimate, $400, w/upgrade, (3 hours + Parts) Alignment separate.
How does this price sound?

Thanks, T

Moog balljoints should run you between 50 and 100 for BOTH with 100 being on the high side. Definitely do them both at once. I'd have both sides done if it was me. I got all 4 shipped to the house for $106--Moog's. Mine's a 2004 2wd btw.

Time wise that's not too bad, but an experienced shop should be able to do it quicker than 3 hours on a 2wd. I did it in my driveway with hand tools--both sides in 3 hours.

Sounds good to me. That is what I did in my laneway. To cheap to pay someone else.

I'd replace both sides if I were you, if one side is gone the other side isn't far behind, It should be pretty cheap, I think is was $600 when I did mine both sides. On my truck both uppers were shot, they will almost always replace the lowers at the same time it's stupid not to. My truck in a 4x4, so a 2wd might be cheaper.

I say go for it. That way with a lifetime warrenty you'll never have to pay full price for that again.

I bought new tires w/alignment. When they went to do the ailgnment, they found the bad ball joint. I did hear some minor clunking noise, but didn't think much of it.

I've decided to go for the overall opinion, and replace all. Makes sence to me not to cocern myself with it again. The other Ball Joints, no doubt, will not be far behind.

In pricing this out, it looks like the Moog parts, "enhanced", whatever that means, are about $250, upper and lower, both sides. I got a local quote of $550, including parts, for the job. Much better than the $400 quote from NTB, to do one side. It goes in tomorrow.......

The way we checked mine was to lift the front end and put a big crowbar under the tire. You could easily see the slop in the balljoints.

If you do a search there's a great write-up here on how to DIY. It's really not hard, but you will need a ball joint removal tool. I got mine at Harbor Freight for $40-something.

$550 is a good price. .My local Ford Dealership wanted $1000 for parts and labor(7.5hrs book labor). I found an alignment shop who will do it for $500. The upper B/J is integrated into a control arm on my 2001 Expedition.

I thought my problem was an out of balance tire. The tire did have a broken steel belt and had to be replaced, but there was still a vibration coming from the front end at speeds around 70mph. From the Tire shop I went to my local Ford dealership who had a coupon for a $39 alignment. The mechanic couldnt do it because the B/J were bad. I replaced all 4.

I need ball joint on my truck I went with Moog upper and lower for both sides and it cost a little under 200 in parts. The alignment shop said they would install for 150 per side. I'm thinking I might take the up on it being that it's getting colder outside.
