Oil Filter

Hi folks i have a 1977 F-150 with a 351m/400 Engine and lately the oil filter appears with some motor oil stains, i've been using a motorcraft FL-1A oil filter (wich is white) since i bought the truck in 1981 and this is the first time something like this happens, i took it over to the mechanic but he couldn't figure it out were the leaking is coming from and i know its not from de filter, i wonder if any of you guys ever had a problem like this, first i believe it was from the steering pump but like i said its motor oil (brown) and not steering fluid wich is clear cuz i used penzoil and its clear and not red like others, well i hope someone could help, thanks!!!

Try looking around the area of the oil pressure sending unit. It may leak from being loose. I have the same problem on my 302 and have tightened the fitting which helped. Not sure where the oil pressure sending unit is on a 351/400. Someone here does though....

how dirty is your engine. When I have leaks, I like to clean the engine around the area the leak is to help pinpoint where the leak is coming from. Then you get to poke around with an inspection mirror and a flashlight.

If someone tightened the filter with a wrench instead of hand tightening, the filter WILL leak...and may even split apart from the pressure.

A valve cover gasket may be seeping oil, which will run down to the area of the filter.

You might also check around the fuel pump to make sure it's not leaking down from there as this is a common place for leaks

Run your fingers along all the VC bolts and where the gasket meets the block. How much oil are you talking about? Do you have a puddle when parked?

Just a shot in the dark but is the filter double gasketed? Did the old filter gasket stick to the block?

Might try another filter, also. I mean a different brand. I have been using Motorcraft(FL-1A) from Walmart and have been seeing some seepage from the filter housing. If I use any other brand, the small amount of oil at the bottom of the filter does not occur. This has only been a problem for the last year or so. Just my experience....?

Maybe fram makes the MC filters now? That would explain why they leak, and are the same price? I miss the days of them being dirt cheap. I think the ones that come from the factory, the ones the dealer sells, and the ones that walmart sell have the same part number, but are different filters.

Try using an oil filter from System-1. They are washable and filter better than a regular filter. That way you can inspect the amount of material being left in your filter. This can be a very valuable tool for keeping an eye on the wear and tear of inernal components. Another cool thing is there is a company ( I can look up the name later) that makes a pre-luber system. It will give your engine 50psi of oil pressure before you start the motor. No more dry starts.......
