If your blinkers and washers aren't working don't buy another blinker/washer switch until you take out old one and clean. I have a 97 150 4x4 and my blinkers and washers were wacked out. Instead of the 99 dollars for a new one I took old one out and cleaned all of the contacts. They are made of brass (I think) and were all green and corroded. Also as someone posted before the wires to the switch can break for some reason, and they did. So 2 hours later and it works like new, I mean it works like brand new. It even feels smoother when you engage the turn signals like it did when new. Might even be worth cleaning if it still works. Hope this helps.
I'm having problems with my turn signals. I'll try cleaning them; stupid question though- where are they? I am thinking in the steering column, is this right?
Thanks.
3 bolts under the plastic on steering column. the swith is 1 unit that is part of the blinker handle, can't miss it. It is all bolted to the colomn on top left hand side. It holds the blinker, washer controls and the emergency switch. Everything is contained in that unit. You can take apart and clean just remember how you took apart b/c there are many small parts. Hope it helps.
Thank you! Well... I took it apart yesterday, cleaned it up and got it all back together. Tested out my blinker, works great! Took the truck for a ride and noticed, now my blinker won't automatically shut off when I turn. Must not have put it together quite right. Before I go pulling it apart again, I have another stupid question- how do the wires disconnect from the blinker unit? I took the unit aprt while they were still attached, and that was a pain. I was just nervous to go yanking those things out incorrectly.
Don't yank! If you look on both harnesses there are clips on top and bottom. They are a little hard to get out. I used a flat screwdriver and got one off and then the other and wiggled back and forth once the clip was clear. Can't believe you did it still connected, must have been tough. Each harness has two (if I remember right) clips. Just take a close look and you will see them.
Also, mine did the same the first time I got it together and had to take back out. Getting it back together might take a few attempts.
I don't know if this helps at all but not sure how else to explain. Good luck.
