First question, should i? I was originally planning on getting a spool which is the same thing as welding, but they dont make em for a 30 spline rear 60. Will it hold up? Ill be running 4.56's with 38 tsl's.
Are you a certified welder or do you plan on having a machine shop do it? If a shop does it they can cool the spool correctly in oil and it will probably hold up. The trick to it is the cooling process so the heat doesn't weaken the surrounding metal.
With that size of tire, I'd definitely not suggest locking it, a 30 spline 60 is not a particularly strong axle.
As for welding it, I'd recommend removing the ring gear from the carrier so that you don't get spatter on the gears etc... A proper pre and post heat works wonders too.
That said, we, on a rather drunken friday afternoon; welded up the 10.25 in my diesel(carrier migrated to my 460 truck this summer) with a 110V wire feed, with the carrier in place in the truck... 10K miles later, I yanked it out, swapped ring gears and stuck it in the 460 truck, cleaned the slag we missed out of the housing on the diesel, put in the open carrier from the 460 truck, and went on my merry way... LOL
Haven't had an issue with it behind the 460 either.
