yeah and spend 4k and still break shafts.....lame!
I'm with quad on this one, if your gonna go big, make it worth the money and time and effort. If it was on a Yota a D60 would be fine, but with the Rockwells you could have 49's or hell, even the new 57 inch BridgeStones, if i had the money, and wanted to go that big, i would definently go with rockwells.
Rockies are cheap compared to a big nasty D60, or larger rear axle. One would have to invest a small mint into a 60 to have strength anywhere near that of a stock rock.
Theres a reason the general off road groups are not using portals.
Couple companies do make them for conventional axles, but they just turned out to be another expensive add on that did not add enough strength to justify the expense.
just make sure they are ujoint axles, check all the bearings, change axle seal and pinion seals...no matter their conditions and put SOLID boots on not zipper, unless you want leaks...
once you get into them you'll see how easy they are to tear apart and rebuild....only thing that requires some sort of a trick are the retainers....
Portals are for increased ground clearance not strenghth so much but if your going with tall tires you must want ground clearance and portals would allow you to run a smaller tire for the same clearance, Unless you just want big tires for looks(Lame!!)
Real Humvees have portal axles, as well as unimogs and are they breaking?
With respect to the OP, (we kinda ran off in a different direction) here is a place that deals with large truck drivetrain components. They may be able to direct you, or maybe even help you out themsleves.
With regards to the other direction; Mog 404's are expensive and rather weak in stock form. They are also fairly expensive.
The kits I was refering to for 14b's and danas are also very expensive. Last I looked was about $8,000 for a set. These were a 2:1 reduction and did offer about 8 inches of offset. The problem with them was that the added weight and added leverage usually tore the axle tube where it mounts to the box.
One can argue the strength of the portal design in the H1 hummer, but this bolt up to the A-arms providing the mounting strength.
Volvo and the MOG have decent units, but they still break, (remember TTC 06).
To consider the portal conversion on a dana (about 8k) and still have to install all of the goodies for the dana could easily put the buyer over the $10,000 mark just for axles.
Does not seem reasonable when Rockwells run about $1,000 to $1,500 for a set.
With thier ease of use, raised pinion input, aftermarket support, I can't see any reason why money would be spent on different technology. Not arguing the technology, I think the portal is a great idea. I would take 2:1 reduction at the splindle over a doubler any day, or even both, wow that would be low.
However I do not believe that this technology is a reasonable cost effective solution yet.
Maybe this is why the OP is asking for info Rockies.
are there dot approved 57" tires that im unaware of?
i want to see pics...or are you talking about tractor tires?
Their not DOT, but i've heard off of here that their are 57 inch bridgestone, but like that game in pre-k, passing the secret, it might be WAY different by the time it reached me! Remember that game?
Just giving options. If more people went to portals maybe the price would come down.
IF you are building up a truck that you were going to keep for a long time. Portals may start to make sense, If you wanted a streetable truck and not a trailer queen portals will allow you to run smaller tires, yet have the center clearance of taller more expensive tires!! So cheaper tires over 20 years and it starts to become a good savings, Not to mention running smaller tires saves wear and tear overall. Also with portals you may not need a aftermarket suspension lift kit, depending on what size tires you choose to run. So you are saving some money there too. http://portal-tek.com/ Always check Ebay for Rockwells, I was looking for a guy at work who wanted them and saw some going for $1500.00 buy it now if you can wait to get them keep an eye on there and somebody within driving distance will probably list some, Or go to the Ebay's Want it now site, You post what you are looking for and people I guess send you pics and info of what they got, I never used it. But it's worth a shot!!
