welding gears ?

Im going to weld my 9" rear end up on my 67 this weekend hopefully. Since the 9" has a front diff cover I was wondering if the gears can be welded just like they would be on a dana 60?"

Beleive that you can do it just the same as any other rear end. THe really nice thing is though that you can carry a spare center section in case your center section blows up

no, not like a 60 but it can be done. you have to remove the axleshafts and 3rd member (please dont try and do it in the carrier! in fact i dont think its possible to do it with it still in the carrier, but its been sooooo long since i have messed with 1/2 stuff, i dont remember)

you'd prolly be better off with a sick welder b/c unlike the 60 (or any other axle out there) the gears are actually encased by the carrier so its really hard to effectively get to them.

you almost have to pull the carrier apart and weld the spiders together and then put them back in, but i dont see all the work bein worth it when you could get a full spool and be done with it for about $100

if you notice in those pics the small holes (golf ball size) thats about all the space you get to get in to weld!

9" with a cover??????
Does not matter, fishman is correct. Does not make sense to pull out the shafts, and the carrier, dis-assemble the ring gear from the carrier, so the spiders can be glued together. Using a stick welder would create enough slag to make it impossible to weld it while it was together. Mig, same problem, Tig, not enough penetration. Even a mini spool would be a better alternative. At least it would be less wrench time.

thanks for the info, looks like a mini spool is a better idea.
