Powerheads.com porting

I saw on the Powerheads.com site where they can port my Aussie heads. I contacted then for a price on porting my heads. They quoted $500 plus around $85 shipping each way. Is it worth the $670? Anyone ever owned a set of their ported heads?

I took their flow numbers from their page and put them in my desktop dyno. It gained over 100hp and only 25ftlbs, but extended the torque another 1000rpms. I know this is speculative, but how close to reality is it?

With a little time and a few tools, you can do an adequate porting job yourself.

For $500.00, I would want a Certified Flow Test of my heads. Without that you have no guarantee that you got what you paid for.

I agree. Unless they are providing flow data for YOUR set of heads, I would be skeptical.

I have ported lots of heads and it's time consuming but rewarding. The 2V heads are already decent flowing heads as stock heads go. Breaking the sharp edges in the bowls is not hard and does help. Working around the valve boss is also worthwhile. I always match port although it is not as important as what goes on in the fuel bowl.

With a little study, a die grinder and some time, you can improve flow in these heads.

Anyone ever messed with a set of the ProComp heads? I know of a couple 5.0 guys that ran them on their 302's with good results.

Was it Standard Abrasives that used to sell a DIY porting kit with all the stones plus a "How To" video?

I also enjoy porting heads. That estimate should include increasing valve size and hardened seats as well as porting. I ported my current heads and had the shop put in 4v valves and hardened seats on both intake/exhaust. Thus far i really like the way it's responding but will know more in a few weeks.

Cant wait to port some more...work a lot more on the exhaust than intake...some folks are not into intake matching...saying it increases backflow. get a die grinder and carbide tip made for metal....good ones run from 15-35 bucks and really take the work out of it and last forever...but you gotta be careful with them.

I'm hoping to have some time this winter to build a flow bench but will likely have to wait til next winter.

Standard abrasives sells a kit that is worthwile, but when I got mine from them a few years back they did not have the carbide bits. You don't want to go after this with just stones. You need a long shank carbide cutter in an egg or pineapple shape. SA also has a diy article on their site but stay away from their info on port matching. There are some other articles around that are very good on diy porting. http://www.sa-motorsports.com/diyport.aspx
