finding a short

concerning a 85 f250

I've had the wire that runs from the solenoid to the alternator melt off at the alternator.

I'm looking to find the cause of this short and need to know how to trace it

It's red coming off the alternator and I wrongfully stated that it goes to the solenoid. it goes to a connector plug and the wire on the other side coming out is yellow

My books don't show a red wire on the alternator. "B" (Batt) terminal should have a Black/Orange (B/O) wire (I think it should be about #14 or #12 gauge) going to a splice having a yellow (Y) wire, another B/O wire and a Yellow/Light Green (Y/LG) wire. If someone has replaced the B/O wire from the alternator to the splice with a too small gauge (i.e., #16 or #18) red wire then the normal alternator output current could melt the wire. Other causes could be a bad alternator or regulator; you should be able to have them checked at Advance or Autozone. If not the problem trace the yellow wire from the above splice to the point where it splices into two Fuse Links one green (14 gauge) which supplies the ignition switch and several other circuits, the other orange (16 gauge) which supplies lights, etc. Check these Fuse Links to see if one or the other is open (blown). If one is open then the short is downstream from it.
