I am in need of replacing shocks on my 99 ext. cab 2WD.
So what have you 2WD guys had luck with for handling, hauling, etc. Looking for bang for the buck a bit too. I am not looking to spend $100 each on the best available.
5% off and free shipping, too? That's some very good bang for the buck.
I ought to mention I've had Bilsteins all around on my Ranger for a couple years now and the truck handles exactly how I want it to. The Bilsteins are a tad firmer than stock, but still nice and smooth on the street. Noticeable improvement over stock with regard to cornering and handling in general.

Yes Sir.... 5% off with the code and the free shipping will calculate since the order is over $75.
I have the KYB GR-2's on my cougar for struts and they are fantastic. Is there a reason I should spend twice the price on Bilstein's? There is no way they are twice as good.
I've been running Skyjacker Nitro's on my truck (Ranger, 6" sus. lift, 33" tires) for about 6 months now and i'm definitely happy with them on and off road. Actually I think they only costed like 45 a piece and for the price it didn't seem like a bad deal at all. I think that my next shock purchase will be a set of Bilstein's though just to see how they are.

Your not really comparing apples to apples. Suspension-wise, what's good for your Cougar and what's good for a Ranger aren't really the same question.
Yeah but in his original post he says he's looking for shocks for his 99 ext. cab 2WD. I assume that means that he owns a ranger and cougar, has a set of KYB's for the cougar, but wants advice on what people run on their rangers.
Then again maybe he is considering KYB's because of his experience with the cougar. Either way in my opinion the only ones i WOULDN'T get are the gabriel "autozone special" shocks!

That's what I am assuming. Which is why I noted that what works well on his Cougar may not work as well on a Ranger. They are different animals, so to speak.
yes and yes. lol. I think i left a sentence out when I replied from work.
I meant to follow up with something like, has anyone tried the GR-2 shock line to see if they perform well.
Yes, on the cougar, I am running GR-2 Struts with Roush lowering springs. Definately a different animal. That's why I didn't just jump on them at $137 for the set of 4. If someone has had similar luck on a ranger or F-series, I would be more than happy to get them for the truck as well.
I do tow a lot of weight, so I want some truck characteristics. but more so I want to get it to handle maybe a bit more like a sport truck. maybe more like a lightning than a 4x4.
No argument with the performance of the Bilstein's, but the price is a little prohibitive, considering that you can get safe handling out of shocks at half the price. So I would have to see a huge performance or life expectancy difference to fork out that much cash for them.
And yes, Gabriel's (also make Arvin) should never be sold where they salt the roads. The rust through in one winter.
Considering what I had to fork out for the hardware to upgrade my SHO's supension (Tokicos and Eibachs), it makes paying $60 per shock (which coincidentally is just about what I paid for my Bilsteins a few years back) seem like peanuts.
But I agree, if you feel you can get the same performance and durability from another product at half the price, then you have to follow your instincts. Good luck with whatever you decide.
